I am Amir Arabshahi, a photographer based in Qom, Iran. Traveling to the pristine regions of Iran and closely encountering the cultures and ways of life of different tribes shaped my perspective and led me toward experimental photography. I began my photographic practice seriously in 2015. My work mainly focuses on people and their relationship with their surroundings, capturing simple, honest, and unmediated moments of everyday life. Most of my frames are formed in the streets, where I walk among people, live alongside them, and photograph not as an observer, but as one of them.

The emotional narrative I intended to express revolves around vulnerability, silent resilience, and the inner emotional weight carried within a collective cultural and spiritual environment. Being captured during a religious ceremony, the portrait reflects both personal presence and a shared atmosphere of intensity. The contrast between darkness and the vivid red symbolizes tension between internal strength and external pressure, while the direct gaze confronts the viewer with a quiet but powerful moment of awareness.

Trust was established through respectful presence and prior awareness. The subject knew about the photographic process, and I spent time within the environment without immediate intervention. By approaching the moment with sensitivity rather than direction, a natural and honest connection was formed.

The lighting and composition were intentionally controlled to emphasize psychological tension. The dominant darkness isolates the subject and removes visual distraction, while the intense red elements—originating from the ritual environment—act as both symbolic and visual anchors. The tight framing compresses space, reinforcing the sense of containment and emotional intensity.

I consider technical precision as preparation rather than destination. By resolving technical decisions beforehand, I leave space for emotional spontaneity to emerge naturally. This balance allows authenticity to remain intact even within a visually controlled frame.

Environment plays a central role in my portrait practice. Even when visually reduced, its cultural and emotional context continues to shape the reading of the image. In this case, the ritual setting provides an underlying narrative that deepens the psychological presence of the subject.

My method is a subtle balance between guiding and observing. I may suggest positioning initially, but I rely mainly on observation to capture authentic expression. The most meaningful moments often occur when the subject is simply present within their own experience.

This recognition is both an honor and a responsibility. It motivates me to continue exploring honest human narratives within cultural contexts. My advice to young portrait photographers is to prioritize empathy over equipment—understanding people will always create stronger images than technical perfection alone.
